We've had lots of messages about Bovaer today. A 'methane reducing' feed additive that Arla is planning to trial on farms in the UK. Rest assured that we will NOT be using it on our farm!!
In fact, as organic producers, we wouldn't even be allowed to use it. Under Soil Association organic standards, every ingredient must be deemed safe and nutritionally useful for the animal.
The push to use products like these (which may have negative side effects on the cows) speaks to a wider problem of blaming cows for climate change. This allows people to continue lifestyles reliant on fossil fuels and shift the blame to animals which have always been here.
Emissions from ruminants are short term and part of a natural cycle. Plus grazing ruminants themselves (when managed within natural holistic systems) are essential to building soil and sequestering carbon back into the ground. Cows are actually the solution, not the problem!!
